On Wednesday, June 8th St. Paul's United Methodist Church suffered a fire.
No one was hurt. A person is arrested for arson. We witness a movement of Holy Spirit in the community: the people we serve and the people working in the the building missed the traumatic part, while so many neighbors and friends helped through witness, prayer and presence. Several eye witnesses took time out of their busy day to testify what they saw of the event.
We will continue to worship, organize for justice, and support Front Door Communities to serve the venerable people with hot lunches, sanitation items and new undergarments and socks.
Front Door Community (FDC) will continue to serve the un-housed and other fragile community members in the side yard service area of St. Paul’s UMC. On the bottom of this letter, I am including a list of items that will allow FDC to keep up their service.
On Sunday June 19th, we have started building our play yard vegetable garden. We have built four raised beds and will continue to amend and upgrade the soil of this garden on the corner of 9th and San Salvador. If you have seedlings of vegetables, bring them for us to plant. If you are moved to help us make fresh food available to all our neighbors in this downtown food desert, please consider helping with a monetary donation towards the vegetable garden to help us provide harvest of healthy food.
Separately, if you are available on Friday, June 24th to help plant 13 trees, please sign up with “Our City Forest” to help plant trees around St. Paul’s campus.
We have an EventBrite link for the event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/363311202587
Front Door Community (FDC) Continue to Serve Ways you can help:
Donate hygiene items or donate a gift card to Target, Amazon, or the Dollar Tree so FDC can purchase them.
Check if your dentist will donate a handful of toothbrush kits
Collect unopened hotel toiletries.
Pick up some four-packs of toilet paper from Dollar Tree. They’re a good size (portable) for the women. Collect paper and plastic bags, tote bags or back packs.
Current short list of needs:
Poise Pads Size 6, Depends (M/L/XL)
sample-sized toothpaste and floss, toothbrushes
body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and small rolls of toilet paper.
Summer-weight socks in light colors
Underwear (cotton Hanes are the most affordable) as follows: Size 5 and 6, bikini; sizes 7, 8, 9, and 10 briefs
Inside our very damaged Sanctuary, the red-velvet heavy curtain has been burned away. The precious historic organ pipes served as small chimneys bringing heat and smoke from the floor to the roof. What has remained is our cross. This event feels like another Pentecost, having fire, smoke, wind and noise surrounding us. But what remains is resolve to bring love to the world, and a community of many people standing together.
Thank you and blessings to you,
St. Paul's United Methodist Church
